Large, heavy breasts can cause physical discomfort and self-consciousness. Dr. Karan Mehta, our board-certified plastic surgeon in Manhattan, offers breast reduction to alleviate pain, improve proportions, and enhance self-confidence. The procedure involves removing excess tissue, reshaping the breasts, and repositioning the nipples for a more balanced appearance.

Restore Optimal Breast Size & Proportions

Breast reduction is a procedure designed to restore optimal breast proportions for individuals with large, heavy breasts. Dr. Mehta performs this procedure to alleviate physical discomfort and improve self-confidence. During the surgery, excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue are removed, reshaping the breasts to achieve a more proportionate appearance. Breast reduction allows individuals to find relief from pain and enjoy a more aesthetically pleasing figure.

Breast Reduction Corrects:

  • Large, heavy breasts
  • Disproportionate breast size in relation to the rest of the body
  • Physical discomfort, such as back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Skin chafing beneath the breasts
  • Difficulty finding well-fitting and stylish clothing
  • Low self-esteem and self-consciousness related to breast size and appearance

Breast Reduction Surgical Details

During a breast reduction performed by Dr. Mehta, you will be placed under anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery. The specific type of anesthesia — general or local — will be discussed during your consultation.

To access the breast tissue, incisions will be made. The style and location of the incisions may vary depending on factors such as your breast size and shape. Common incision options include the anchor incision (around the areola, vertically down the breast, and horizontally along the breast crease) or the vertical incision (around the areola and vertically down the breast).

Through these incisions, excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue will be removed. The remaining breast tissue will be reshaped, and the nipples repositioned for a more proportionate appearance. If necessary, the size of the areolas can be reduced to match the new breast size. In most cases, breast reduction surgery takes 3 to 5 hours.

Candidates for Breast Reduction:

  • Individuals with large, heavy breasts
  • Individuals with disproportionate breast size in relation to their body
  • Individuals with low self-esteem related to their breast size
  • Individuals with chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain due to the weight of their breasts
  • Those experiencing difficulty in participating in physical activities due to breast size
  • Individuals with skin irritation and rashes beneath the breasts
  • Those with shoulder grooving caused by bra straps digging into the shoulders
  • Individuals with psychological distress and self-image issues related to the breast size
  • Non-smokers or those who are willing to stop smoking before and after the surgery
  • Those who are in generally good emotional and physical health
  • Those with realistic expectations from the procedure

The Recovery Process

After breast reduction, you can expect initial swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the first few days. Dr. Mehta will provide post-operative instructions, including wearing a supportive bra, taking prescribed medications, and avoiding strenuous activities. During recovery, allow yourself ample rest and avoid lifting heavy objects. You may experience temporary changes in breast sensation, which improve over time.

It is normal for the incision scars to appear red and raised initially, but they will gradually fade and flatten as you heal. Dr. Mehta will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and provide guidance throughout your recovery journey. It is essential to attend these appointments and communicate any concerns or questions you may have. By following the recommended guidelines, you can achieve a smooth and successful recovery.
